What is Proofreading?
Redaction is a word of French origin. According to the Turkish Language Association, the meaning of the proofreading is to make the text ready for publication by making the necessary editing on a currently written text. In other words, what is proofreading? If it is necessary to explain in detail, proofreading is the modifications made before the publication in order to examine whether a written text complies with the grammar and punctuation rules and to allow for a more enjoyable reading in a way that does not change the content of the text in terms of meaning.
Writings or books that contain a lot of information, academic writings such as articles or theses, translation texts or annual reports, that is, all texts that are briefly transferred to the written language, require a proofreading process. Before these texts are published, they need to undergo a supervision, that is, a proofreading process, in terms of compliance with grammar, punctuation and spelling rules.
The people who perform the proofreading process are also called editors. In general, the editor is the person who makes the final proofreading of the texts before they are published. By reviewing the written text, the editor can correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors, and also add or remove contents to make it more readable without changing the narrative of the text. Qualifications of an editor can be listed as;
- Should be prone to teamwork
- Should have a command of grammar and punctuation and spelling rules
- Should follow-up current publications
- Should know a foreign language
. An editor, who wishes to be good at his/her job, should have these qualities.
How to Proofread?
The answer to the question How is proofreading done? first requires a written text. Proofreading is made on each type of written text. All errors in the text are corrected with the proofreading process.
The editor must have a good command of the subject of the text to be proofread. First of all, the text should be read thoroughly. Later, if there are any grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors in the text, they should be corrected. Then, the text is read again, and some content is either added or removed to allow for more enjoyable reading experience. However, adding or removing contents should not change the meaning of the text.
The following is expected from a well-executed proofreading process;
- Adding a fluent expression to the text
- Ensuring the text cohesion
- Finding words or phrases suitable for the text
- Correcting all kinds of errors
- Performing the revision reading
Only after these processes are performed, the text can be considered as well-edited. The text is ready to be published after these processes. At this point, another point to be considered is that the revision reading process should be performed by another editor rather than the one editing the text.
Proofreading Prices
The proofreading process, which is the process of correcting all grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors of the text, is a kind of editorial service. In such cases, the author making the errors is warned. They are warned not to make such an error again. Proofreading prices are also determined on the basis of the number of words in a document. Accordingly, the proofreading fee is 80 TRY for each hundred words.
